Meet Lucas Crane, the man from the DIY collective Silent Barn, New York, who's here doing a month long recidency at WORM. One of the projects he likes to present here is called the non amoral surveillance, wich is a set up of microphones thru the building, with wich one can mix his own soundpiece, and put that on cassette.

In the studio he's collecting sounds, to later incorporate in his vivid live shows, mixing with cassette decks.

The past 3 months we have been dismanteling en rebuilding the studio. The new studio is nearly finished, and already operational. We're back in business! An update with guests and picts will follow soon. This weeks guest is G Lucas Crane, Artist in residence with WORM's Moddrlab. The End of this month's studioguest will be Italian soundartist Ricardo Senni.

Computer Controlled Voltage - Workshop over hoe je je (modulaire) analoge synthesizer kan besturen met je computer.

Heb je oude analoge synthesizers en ben je geinteresseerd in het gebruiken van die synths in je muziek? Wil je een analoge synth integreren in je digitale studio set-up?
Oude analoge synths werken met CV en gate of trigger, hebben meestal geen MIDI en kunnen daarom maar moeilijk worden geintergreerd in een digitale studio set-up. Maar dat is nou net wat je wilt; je oude synth controleren met je computer en combineren met harddisk recording en samples. Deze workshop gaat over het gebruik van synthesizers die geen midi hebben, in combinatie met een computer (die bv Ableton-Live draait).

De workshop bestaat uit 4 delen van ieder ongeveer 2 uur op 9, 16, 23 en 30 maart;

The Benjolin Workshop 26 February 2011

The Benjolin is a ‘noise box’ that is ‘bent by design’, meaning that it always has a definite amount of unpredictability, while it is still intuitive to play.
In a one-day workshop, conducted by the buddies in electronic madness, Rob Hordijk and Joker Nies, participants will build a analogue sound-device, that is very different from what you usually will find with other DIY-kits.
The kit will ONLY be available through attending the workshop, it is not sold separately. The Benjolin DIY-kit will be easy enough to build even for a beginner in electronics. After successfully building the instrument, which is guaranteed with the help of Rob and Joker, the workshop participants will take home a versatile and very unique analogue synthesizer that can can influence the behaviour of other voltage-controlled modules through seven different control-voltages. It is also able to receive control-voltages for filter-frequency and both of it‘s oscillators.

since our venue is in a state of in between new building and old being stripped, i moved the livecast camera installation to the studio for a temporary setup, allowing us to keep developing and testing some features related to camera control and remote control - using PD for control over ip we can practically stay at home livecasting our shows.

Part two of our workshop for kids is underway. About thirty kids participate each time and listen to an artist (a mini concert and a story on his music) and make a track in our analogue studio with the aide of Radboud Mens. The artist this week is MachineFabriek.
This project is a cooperation with SKVR.

The WORM radio/studiocrew were busy traveling, doing live horspil in linz, brno and vienna (at the MQ and ORF radio). we were especially happy to find out that alan ginsberg is still alive. (in more then 1 entity). Here's the place we played in BRNO, Skena Louka...

And the next morning, David Subik (who organised the concert) and Josef Cseres (who attained) looked like this...

And this was in Vienna, our performance at Museumsquartier...

The final version of the radioplay was done at ORF Kunstradio and broadcasted the same evening. It was very well (live-)mixed by the ORF technicians. And of course, we stupid peasants were flabbergasted by the luxuries of the ORF Radioplay Studio. Except the usual stuff (great mics, 5.1 surround, very expensive looking HD recording gear) the pebbles path was out favorite...

THE WORM RADIO SONG POEM RADIA SHOW DECEMBER 2010

This show consists of a number of songs that were made by the Radio WORM Song Poem Crew at the STRP Festival in Eindhoven (november 2010). The theme was '80ties cassette culture' and the idea was that the audience could choose a genre from a menu, write a text, pay 3 euro's, and then the Radio WORM Song Poem Crew would make the song with 'original' 80ties gear (the most advanced device being a 4track cassette machine), hence the 'vintage' sound qualities of the pieces. The song was delivered within a short time (5 - 30 minutes) to the client on cassette tape. The available genres on the menu were; Depressing Lo Fi Noise, Boring Art Shit, Early Happy Commodore, Gay Budget Beats, Industrial SM Love Songs, Echoïstic Melancholia Dub, Fucked Up Cassette Hardcore and Incredible Cheap Casio-Pop. There were 19 songs made in a few hours, the best of them you'll find here. Text subjects vary from ode's to leaving colleague's, the impossibilities of having a love affair where one lives in Eindhoven and the other in Amsterdam, Statements about Radio Art, a Monty Cantsin Neoist Song and lots of boring and horrible poetry. Enjoy!

The Home Swinger DIY Workshop door Yuri Landman

The Homeswinger is a twelve string electric instrument with a changing sounds from poignant clock or bell-like sounds by means of an additional movable bridge. The technique is based on the work of Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth's dissonant screwdriver guitar preparations and the theory of Harry Partch who incorporated it in his Kitara instruments.
Landman developed a special tone color scheme that clearly show the theory behind the practice of his predecessors.

The result of the workshop by Yuri Landman will be presented at WORM. The workshop members have composed pieces that they will carry out on their self-built instruments.

Sinds vijf jaar maakt en curateert WORM hoorspelen die het midden houden tussen het Stockhauseriaanse Hörspil en het piepende deuren/grindpad/fiktieve Doorsneehoorspel.

WORM's huidige hoorspelreeks brengt steeds een geluidskunstenaar samen met een dichter. Verborgen agenda: het botsen of versmelten van geluids- en taalabstracties. Via Poetry International werd het contact met de Deense dichteres Ursula Andkjær Olsen gelegd. Haar tekst Gardensensibilities is de basis voor een live-hoorspel waarbij zij zelf een van de stemmen speelt. De WORMRADIOcrew - bestaande uit Lukas Simonis, Henk Bakker en Nina Hitz, Yuko Uesu - maakte bij de tekst een muziekachtig stuk dat behalve decor en sfeer ook personage is en zich als een beminnelijke natuurramp gedraagt. Sierbestrating, tuinhout, meubilair: Gardensensibilities voorziet in al uw wensen in en om de tuin. Voor particulier én hovenier.

Worm’s Geluidswerkplaats invited Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Leif Elggren to do a residency and we asked them specifically to work on a live-performance and not only work in our electronic studio but to see the whole WORM building as their playfield. They suggested that the project takes its starting point in the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland and what they would do during the week and during the performance would orbitate around that concept. And we said; yes please.

The reason we ask those two gentlemen is because –very simple- we like their work a lot, also because they don’t seem to linger around 1 certain subject and safely stay there, but they go forward in all kinds of directions –electronic music, drones, electronic voice phonomena, radio art, absurd performances, conceptual stuff, a virtual but-not-so-virtual kingdom...

They present on saturday 19th the result of their work at WORM.

In the WORMstudio they concentrated on sound mining, to be used in various products- of the arp 2500 and the EMS Putney. We will hear from them in future days no doubt the result of their exploratory work.

The idea behind this workshop is to produce a professional radio play within a period of 3 weeks. During the production phase, the participants will have access to the studio facilities of WORM including the use of vintage and digital synthesizers, samplers, microphones, hard-disc recording and professional peripheral equipment. The participants will form crews and cooperate in creating the play.
Felix Kubin is a composer, radio-playwright and performance artist from Hamburg.

V&B (www.myspace.com/vernonandburns) were in the studio, working on a radioplay, later this year to be broadcasted on vpro/radio6/cafe sonore, but on the Live Studio Event (Popular Noise For The Masses) they will present an 30 min extract, live, indeed. A small part of that we'll put on display here, shortly.
2 Years ago they produced another Horspil The Eldritch Transmissions, also here in the studio.

Join our field-recording workshop about the practical and artistic ways of field recordings and how to apply them into a soundwork.
With Derek Holzer and Justin Bennet and the WORMstudio team

The starting point is to create a field recording soundpiece¹.

Basic knowledge of recording and editing is required. But you don¹t need to be an expert and the WORM crew can always help you.
The project happens in a 3-weeks timespan. The majority of the work is self-efficacy of the participants, so you can spend as much time as you find necessary.

Studio Use. Each participant will receive at least a half-day studio use with light support. Possible; filtering or editing of material, possibly adding electronic elements, etc.

Tuesday December 1st 20:00 - 2200u WORM STUDIO; Introduction Derek Holzer. About field recording, the concepts that are involved there, opportunities, how & where to start, etc.

Tuesday December 8 20:00 - 2200u WORM STUDIO, A practical session by Simonis and HS Bakker (worm-studio crew). For people who have no equipment we outline the possible uses of worm-gear or what equipment is adequate and cheap to buy, etc. Furthermore, a listening of material allready made by the workshop members last week and any criticism or comment thereon. And a brief explanation about filtering or editing materials, and possibly adding electronic elements.

In the (late) noon and while enjoying a afhaal¹roti (-which is not included in the workshop price), the listening of the pieces together with Justin Bennett as late coach of the project, including issues; Live presentation, eavesdropping / quadrofonie, Remix.

In the evening (2030u), Presentation at RIDERS ON THE WORM. The pieces are presented by Justin & makers during a live event at WORM.

When enough material comes out of the workshop, RADIO WORM-special is made about the whole project (and broadcasted on 20 different radio stations).

MIDI IMPLEMENT PART TWO

With the arrival of two HKU sound design students, robin and nick, who will do an 10 week internship at the WORMstudio, the midi implementation takes a higher gear. Watch the coming weeks the progression we make, starting with ableton live and max for live patches, using two kentons to connect to the arp, the korg, the putney. We promise christmas tunes, cheeky arrangements and brandnew ringtones.

We invited Peter Wiesenthaner to work a few days in the Studio and make a bit of sound design for a Radioplay project that is probably gonna be finished & broadcasted next january. After producing some very beautiful sounds and talking about wintersport Peter found time to relax and befriend the two WORM-studio slaves, Henk & Lukas. here they are, looking very relaxed. (again). Some sound will be posted later.

In the second week of august Michael Morley (the Dead C), Sarah Stephenson & Nina Canal (ex-UT) used the WORM studio to work on several things, one being a conceptual Cornelius Cardew Piece 'The Tiger's Mind' and they also got to record a lot of other new material.
'The Tiger's Mind' was originally played with a fourth member, Nadia Lichtig, in Paris for a Cornelius Cardew festival

It's an interesting piece, so i asked them for some more information about it.

about; THE TIGER’S MIND

The Tiger’s Mind, written in 1967, the year Cardew completed his monumental graphic score Treatise, is the first score he wrote exclusively in verbal notation. The score is divided into two individual narrative parts or pieces, “Day Piece” and “Night Piece,” and is intended as a mainspring for an
expressly improvised performance. Initially intended as a sextet, in which each musician chooses one of six narrative characters (Amy, the circle, the mind, the tiger, the tree, and the wind) as a musical guideline, the number of performers, along with the allocation of roles and procedural methods, are
suggested but not obligatory. As Cardew stated, the score requires a willingness to play “in the widest sense of the word including the most childish.

THE TIGER’S MIND score

DAY PIECE

The tiger fights the mind that loves the circle that traps the tiger. The circle is perfect and outside time. The wind blows dust in the tiger's eyes. Amy reflects, relaxes with her mind, which puts out buds (emulates the tree). Amy jumps through the circle and comforts the tiger. The tiger sleeps in the tree. High wind. Amy climbs the tree, which groans in the wind and succumbs. The tiger burns.

NIGHT PIECE

The tiger burns and sniffs the wind for news. He storms the circle, if inside to get out , if outside to get in. Amy sleeps while the tiger hunts. She dreams of the wind, which then comes and wakes her. The tree trips Amy in the dark and in her fall she recognizes her mind. The mind, rocked by the wind tittering in the leaves of the tree, and strangled by the circle, goes on the nod. The circle is trying to teach it's secrets to the tree. The tree laughs at the mind and at the tiger fighting it..

Derek Holzer was this week artist in residence at the WORM ModdrLab____, with a Neanderthal Electronincs Workshop of building your own synth he showed that with little means you can create an exciting self composed basic synthesizer. He also spent 2 long days at the Studio. On the clip below he is filming a synth scematic while Mr Jean is performing his self built synth.

Exciting times at the studio as the midi to cv implementation is taking shape. At the moment there's a set up for the EMS (putney) and MS 20 (korg). Now you can sit and compose on your pc music for these synths just as you would for your soft synths, but the studio machines sound brutal.

below is an little example of a demo setup. the putney has a relative range of 3 three octaves, depending on where you start, the MS 20 is another case to study.

These are the contestants for our bi-annual "ARP 2500 fast patching competition". receiving their first lecture and demo on analoge synthesis by Dr Simonis and Herr B.
Well not really, but a growing number of schools send their students over to visit our studios, where they do get a short introduction into music in general, old machines and weird sounds in particular. Nothing wrong with that.

Aki and Alan were here 10 & 11 may and in two days recorded possibly their new album. more news about that follows.

Coming monday we plan to install the kenton midi to cv converter, a new and exciting feature for the studio with wich the studio as a whole but also its seperate components are easily accesible thru midi and thus integrated into YOUR setup. more news about that next week.

Mondaymorning...Its their first day of a week long stay at the studio, and they intend to use as many of the machines as possible, into a electro-gamelan piece they intend to make.
so first lessons on the arp 2500, how to get a controlled note out of it.
anyhow, 5 hours later, they already got the concussor going, filter external sounds thru the arp while sequencing, had a weary go at the serge, decided that the putney was out of control, and the arp 2600 not very reliable either.

Anyway, here's a track they made that week and later mixed at home. Details on what we hear will follow.

Marc writes: "We used gamelan samples from a free library, sequenced them in Ableton Live, then set it out into the Serge and Arp 2500. The Arp was being modulated with lfo's and envelops from the Serge as well as the other sequencer on top of the rack."

Here on display are some pieces, excerpts, studies and sound explorations, done by various studio guests over the past 2 years:

Captain Ahab did a ARP 2500 improv, in the week of his stay here before his concert on tuesday 25th of march 2008 (historical allready: Di 25 Mrt 2008 'de reünie' with: captain ahab (us) + toecutter (au) + realicide (us) + eustachian.

Gelbart was here 1st week of may, in a increadible display of productiveness, produced several complete pieces as well as numerous studies, on ARP and Putney. Check em.

Max Tundra worked in the studio in june 2007 and produced this track for RadioWORM.

Stephen O Mally worked a week in September 2008, working on a commisioned piece for a dance performance. he did various sound studies on the ARP, and brought in a keyboardplayer to play a midiscore while Stephen manipulated the ARP. This is one of the versions they took.

"when vtb played at worm in december 2007 we were supposed to do a recording session that was to be used by worm for their online radio show or something on the worm web. it was in our contract that we do a show and recording session.when we arrived at worm for the studio recording there was no sound
engineer. a couple of hours later someone did come to record us but it was very ad hoc and we didn't record too much.anyway, clarence took the recordings away and prepared some tracks from it. then he sent the tracks to the rest of the band and in typical volcano the bear style we forgot about them until now. so after that explanation vtb have 3 tracks recorded at worm. total time is about 14 minutes.would you like us to send them to you? also, we may want to use them ourselves at some point in the near future - is this ok with worm?ok, i hope all this makes sense to you and we look forward to your response.cheersaaron"
